Emma has lived in the small Amish community of Faith's Lake for all eighteen years of her life. The oldest of five girls, she takes on the burden on household responsibility when her mother falls gravely ill. As her mother's condition worsens, she must accompany her into the English world as they seek medical treatment despite the disapproval of the community. While her mother receives treatment, Emma ventures out into the strange unknown world of cars and mobile phones, and finds herself cornered by street performers heckling her for money. Terrified, she doesn't know what to do. Then a large man comes to her defense and scares the performers away. As Emma turns to thank her savior, he looks at her dismissively and walks away. Angered and upset, Emma returns to the hospital and finds him there too. She discovers that his name is Michael and he's a woodcutter who works on the hospital grounds. While her mother gets treated, Emma takes her lunch out to the grounds every day and slowly, she and Michael begin to talk. As she finds herself falling for the handsome woodcutter, she must also struggle with her concern for her ill mother and her duties back at home. Can love truly conquer all, or is reality always around the corner to remind one what’s most important in life?

This is NOT a book; but a collection of thirteen short stories. Editing seems to have been non-existent. The stores read as if some are grade school required papers with homophones filling the pages. Continuity? In two adjacent sentences the character's name is changed in one story. In one story we have the characters riding in a "boggy" and stopping to "unload the car." An Amish boy who goes to college and with no experience becomes a walk-on AFL player. Another girl admires her father's mustache. Another story has it hard to hear over the noise of the power tools at a repair site. It would appear that the only knowledge of the Amish by several of the authors is that they wear black hats. Between Two Worlds Etenia Hoffman 9781520537085 Books Reviews
There was little time wasted on editing, proof-reading or research, (an Amish wicker dining table? Oh, and present day (from hospital scans, etc.) Amish hiring a non-Amish driver to get to the hospital and he's using "reins", therefore horse, to get there.) . Personally, I find bad grammer, homophones (piece for peace, etc.), and switching from past tense to present tense, etc. frustrating. Although I have no issue with a mixture of settings and time periods within a compilation of stories, I think they should be consistent in value and moral tone. The name and cover of this book would indicate Amish stories. Some are, but, progressively they change, still most are fairly consistent. One has the main character worshiping Budda. Spoiler alert which further explains the low rating Then the last story glorifies the wonderful life of a woman with two (male) best friends who finish college together. Both are in love with her. She can't choose so lives the high life with designer clothing, world travel, expensive restaurants, you get the idea, but with both of them. Starting out, they are all loving best friends, but platonic. That doesn't last, so she switches back and forth, fully with their blessings, of course, (not graphic, but... ). Ends happily though! She is pregnant, doesn't know which one is the father, but that's okay, they all live happily ever after! The writer is not without talent. It is a shame that is not guided by common sense, research and good taste.
Good book
Firstly let me state I am not Amish but enjoy clean reading. What I don't enjoy is poor editing and a writing style with little depth. Names of charaters sometimes even get changed within a single paragraph. The delicious smell of beef stew which brings the family to the supper table becomes pork sausages and mash on the plate.
There are tense changes in mid paragraph and most characters have so little depth that it is impossible to have an emotional connection with them.
I can't comment on the Amish traditions and way of life but they did seem contradictory from story to story. Clean short stories can we well written but these simply are not although each story has the potential to improve with a rewrite.
A good story!
A very enjoyable short story - 10 chapters so not too short - & with sadness, & job.
And there are 7 bonus stories also.
I can't recommend this book to anyone. It's deceiving. The first story is what it says a clean Amish Romance. Most of the other stories that make up the book are very strange, especially the last one... one girl with two boyfriends all living together. Some of the stories are repeated to make up the 10 or 12 stories. Only one or two semi okay.
Between two worlds to me was true fiction. The author describes Emma as
completely unaware of life
outside the Amish. Someone who doesn't even recognize a phone. There are
phone booths near homes for them to use when necessary and many have secret cell phones. They
also recognize need for medical care when necessary and the community pays the bills when needed. There were so many misleading assumptions in the book but I will end with this. No Amish daughter would be so forward to kiss a man especially after meeting him just a few days and no mother, would give consent for child to leave the faith so easily. Also the father is always in charge of decisions. I found this story lacking in research and condescending to the Amish. They may not ascribe to English ways but they are not ignorant.
